Career and Education are Determined by “Context”

The Essence of Life Planning, Considered from the Moments When Context Changed My Life as Someone Raised in Japan

What My Sister’s Choice Taught Me

I was raised in Japan, but from a young age, I witnessed close examples of “how changing context changed a life.” The most symbolic was my sister’s experience of choosing an international school for high school and going abroad alone.

Just changing the educational environment and language transformed values, career paths, and all available career options—witnessing that dramatic change right next to my family strongly influenced my thinking.

Furthermore, influenced by my parent’s work environment at a foreign-affiliated company and being surrounded by many “adults working in English,” I gradually came to think this: The quality of opportunities that come into one’s life is determined by “what kind of context is built within oneself.”

Opportunity is Proportional to “Context,” Not “Ability”

Even among “people in Japan,” the amount of connection with the world differs surprisingly. What creates this gap is not qualifications or academic background, but in which context daily life unfolds.

Stage Description
TOEIC 990 in Japan Strong qualification, but context is limited
Exposure to International Projects Connecting with the world while in Japan
Working for a Foreign-Affiliated Company Colleagues are mainly Japanese, but the environment changes
Overseas Assignment Experience Living context becomes half Japan, half overseas
Working in a Non-Japanese Team A fully global environment while in Japan
Building a Business Overseas The context with the most opportunities

The higher the stage, the stronger the qualifications, but the lower the stage, the more opportunities. Why? Because the opportunities a person can receive appear optimized for “the context they currently belong to.”

When Context Changes, Opportunities Change Dramatically

The Power of Context

Even with the same ability, the quality and quantity of opportunities one can receive change dramatically depending on the context one belongs to.

The Law of Optimization

Opportunities appear optimized for the current context, so changing context is the most effective approach.

Strategic Transition

By updating the context step by step, you can expand possibilities while minimizing risk.

The Reality COVID-19 Confronted Us With

From a Sense of Crisis to Determination

The moment the COVID-19 pandemic began, I understood clearly for the first time.

“It is dangerous for both myself and my children to continue living solely within a Japanese domestic context.”

“We must build a context within our family that has the power to earn foreign currency.”

What had been “someday going overseas” turned, due to COVID-19, into a determination to “definitely go and acquire a global context.” From there, I began making choices that seemed inexplicable to others.

  1. Changing living environment within Japan
  2. Going overseas
  3. Changing the living context itself

Looking back, this process was very close to the concept of “gradual migration.” Instead of changing everything at once, it’s a method of gradually updating the context while expanding the career possibilities for children.

The Moment the Context Changed, My Work Changed Too

Years later, I realized. Colleagues and clients were non-Japanese, projects progressed entirely in English, and projects in areas I would never have encountered in a local Japanese context came my way—this way of working had become the norm.

Not a Matter of English Ability

This is not because “I became able to speak English.”

Building Context

The essence is that a global context was built within me.

Natural Inflow

Opportunities optimal for that context began to flow in naturally.

When context changes, the value of ability, effort, and qualifications skyrockets. The same skills have completely different value in a different context.

A Child’s Future is Determined by “Context Design”

I strongly believe this: A child’s future is determined more by “in which context they grow up” than by their ability.

And context can be intentionally designed by the family choosing the environment. This may be the most important asset parents can give their children.

The “Context Design” Options Chosen by the Wealthy

That is precisely why wealthy families considering the following choices is not a luxury, but a rational risk hedge and a family strategy.

Overseas Education

Provides the opportunity to build a global perspective and network from an early age and receive education at a world standard.

International School

Enables learning in an environment with diverse cultural backgrounds and naturally acquiring an international sensibility.

Gradual Migration

Gradually changes the living context while minimizing risk, allowing the whole family to adapt.

Global Career Design

Accumulates education and experience based on the premise of a career on the world stage from the beginning.

The Power of Context I Have Witnessed Myself

  1. Early Childhood — Witnessed my sister’s enrollment in an international school and study abroad.
  2. Growing Up — Grew up surrounded by a parent working for a foreign-affiliated company and adults in English-speaking environments.
  3. COVID-19 Pandemic — Felt acutely the need for a global context and solidified my determination.
  4. Environmental Change — Gradually changed my living environment and moved overseas.
  5. Present — Work in a fully global context and acquire new opportunities.

Because I have witnessed its impact firsthand, I want families choosing education from now on to first consider “how to design the context.”

Both Education and Career Begin with Context Design

Be Aware of Context

Start by recognizing which context you and your child are currently in.

Define the Target Context

Have a clear family vision for what kind of context you want to build.

Transition Gradually

Instead of changing everything at once, update things step by step.

Both education and career start from there. Designing context is the strategic choice that has the greatest impact on a child’s future.

The quality of opportunities that come into one’s life is determined by “what kind of context is built within oneself.”
